What's New in Teams Calling, Meetings and Devices: August & September 2026

A practical rundown of the August and September 2026 Microsoft Teams updates, Teams Phone Agent rolling out, a big wave of Queues app features, video recap in 23 languages, zero-touch provisioning for Android devices, and Teams Rooms updates moving to the Pro Management Portal.

What's New in Teams Calling, Meetings and Devices: August & September 2026

A small change in the series first: Microsoft has moved What’s New in Teams to a quarterly cadence. This edition covers August and September together, and the next ones are planned for December, March and June. So expect fewer posts from me on this topic, but with more in each one.

And there is a lot in this one. If you only read one section, make it Teams Phone. Teams Phone Agent has moved from the Frontier preview I wrote about in June to rolling out, and the Queues app gets so many updates that it is starting to look like a lightweight contact center in its own right. Automatic recording and transcription for call queues, which was still “in development” in my May overview, is now rolling out as well.

Microsoft Teams Phone

Teams Phone Agent and voice agents

  • Teams Phone Agent (AI calling receptionist). Answers business calls with conversational AI. Answers are grounded in the FAQ files and URLs your organization configures, callers can book, reschedule, cancel or review appointments through configured integrations, and when a human is needed the call is transferred with AI-generated notes so the caller doesn’t have to repeat themselves. Supports 60+ languages and locales, including nights and weekends. Rolling out.
  • Monitor Teams Phone Agent in the Queues app. Supervisors get a Teams Phone Agent overview in the Queues app dashboard: call volume, containment rate, average time callers spend with the agent and disconnected calls. The Queues app is part of Teams Premium. Public preview.
  • Custom Copilot Studio voice agents with Teams Phone. Makers can build voice agents in Copilot Studio for specialized workflows, think purchase-order status or invoice balances. Teams Phone Agent can hand a caller off to the custom agent, or you assign the voice agent to a resource account so callers reach it directly. Usage is billed separately under the Copilot Studio consumption model. Frontier Program preview.

My take: the combination is what matters here. Teams Phone Agent handles the generic front door, a Copilot Studio agent handles the specific business process, and the Queues app gives supervisors the oversight. That is the stack customers will ask about when they want to replace a traditional IVR. Before you go there, sort out licensing (Teams Premium for the Queues app, Copilot Studio consumption for custom agents) and, just as important, the quality of the FAQ content you ground the agent in. The agent is only as good as the sources you give it.

Queues app

The Queues app gets a long list of updates this quarter:

  • Automatic recording and transcription for call queues. Admins can enable it per queue, decide who can access the recordings, and recordings are stored in SharePoint and reachable through call recaps in shared call history. Rolling out. (ID 565215, MC1401299)
  • Intelligent call recap. Recorded or transcribed queue calls get AI-generated notes with key discussion points and follow-up actions, available from the Recap tab in the call history. Rolling out. (ID 569017)
  • Copilot in shared call history. Users with Copilot can open Copilot Chat from the Recap tab and ask questions about a recorded call. Requires a Copilot license and a recorded call. Rolling out. (ID 568933, MC1461160)
  • Shared call history. The whole queue sees one shared list of missed, incoming and outgoing calls plus voicemails, instead of everyone only seeing their own. Admins choose whether all queue members or only authorized users get access. Rolling out. (ID 530579)
  • Resolution status for queue calls. Missed calls and voicemails can be marked Unresolved, In progress or Resolved, so a shift handover can filter on what still needs follow-up. Rolling out.
  • Auto attendant shared voicemails. Voicemails left through an auto attendant now show up in the Queues app next to call queue calls and voicemails, instead of waiting in a separate mailbox. Rolling out. (ID 567457, MC1443511)
  • 45-day call history reporting. Historical reporting goes from 30 to 45 days, with reports opening on the last 7 days by default. Rolling out. (ID 547825)
  • Authorized users manage call queue settings in Teams. Supervisors and team leads configured as authorized users can change key queue settings, such as greeting, music on hold and exception handling, directly from Teams settings. Rolling out.
  • Queues app on Teams mobile. Representatives can stay opted in, review recent calls and voicemails, and call back from their phone. I covered this in May as well, it is still rolling out. (ID 559386, MC1279071)
  • Queues app adoption in the Teams Premium usage dashboard. Admins can see how many people actively use the Queues app in the Teams admin center, useful when you need to prove value during a Teams Premium trial. Rolling out.

The theme is clear: collaborative calling instead of every agent working in isolation. Shared call history, resolution status and auto attendant voicemails in one place solve the classic “who is calling this customer back?” problem.

One practical note on automatic recording: being able to turn it on per queue is easy, but recording every call has privacy and compliance implications, especially here in Europe. Check with your privacy officer, make sure callers are informed (for example in the queue greeting), and think about retention in SharePoint before you flip the switch.

Calling and delegation

  • Customize recording and transcription notifications. Admins can tailor the notification text users see when recording or transcription starts in Teams VoIP calls, configured in the Teams admin center. That fits nicely with the compliance point above. Rolling out. (ID 567302, MC1426709)
  • Call lock and delegate join alerts. Delegators can lock an active call so delegates can’t join or resume it, see when a delegate joins, and optionally play warning tones when a delegate joins or resumes. Requires call delegation to be configured. Rolling out. (ID 567306, MC1429012)

Teams Meetings, Webinars & Town Halls

  • Video recap. The narrated highlight reel I covered in May was limited to English. It now supports meetings in 23 languages across 31 regional variants, delivered as part of the intelligent meeting recap. Rolling out. (ID 558540, MC1479506)
  • Translate intelligent meeting recaps. A translation button lets users switch the recap language at any time, even if another language was chosen during the meeting. No admin setup. Rolling out. (ID 567458, MC1446799)
  • Breakout rooms up to 1,000 participants. Up from 300 participants and 50 rooms to 1,000 participants across 100 rooms, in Teams Meetings and Teams Events. Rolling out. (ID 560320, MC1330891)
  • Choose who controls production tools in Teams Events. Organizers designate at setup who controls production tools (Manage what attendees see and the green room): organizers and co-organizers, presenters too, or specific people. Rolling out. (ID 567305, MC1443520)
  • Expanded presenter visibility in Manage what attendees see. Producers can resize and expand the presenter panel to see more presenters at once, which reduces the risk of putting the wrong person on screen. Rolling out. (ID 567467, MC1443518)
  • New layouts when sharing content in Teams events. Three layouts: speaker focused, content focused or content only, on Teams for Windows and Mac. Rolling out. (ID 564613, MC1419802)
  • Teams VDI optimization supports Teams Events. Attendees on Azure Virtual Desktop, Windows 365, Citrix, Omnissa and Amazon can offload audio and video to the local device, with captions, DVR, reactions, streaming chat and Q&A supported, and it works with first- and third-party eCDNs. Rolling out. (ID 561648)

Admin and monitoring

  • Enhanced real-time alerting rule management. Duplicate, bulk-upload users to and delete real-time alerting rules in the Teams admin center. Covers in-progress meeting and call rules for up to 500 users. Rolling out. (MC1470901)
  • Single pane for monitoring meetings and calls. Monitor and troubleshoot live and past meetings and calls org-wide from one view in the Teams admin center. Rolling out. (ID 568782, MC1462463)
  • Meeting participant audit records for all tenants. Participant detail audit records are now shared with every participating tenant, not only the organizer’s, and each record shows whether the meeting was organized inside or outside your tenant. No setup required. Rolling out. (MC1441774)

The VDI support for Teams Events is the one I would point out to customers running AVD or Citrix: town halls on virtual desktops have always been a pain point, and offloading media to the endpoint fixes most of it.

Workplace: Teams Rooms and devices

  • Interpreter agent in Teams Rooms on Android. Real-time translation so participants in the room listen in their chosen language. Requires Teams Rooms Pro. Rolling out. (ID 562665, MC1446807)
  • Zero-touch provisioning for MDEP-based Android devices. Deploy MDEP-based Android Teams devices hands-off, with security policies applied from first boot, managed from the Teams Rooms Pro Management portal. Think Autopilot, but for Android Teams devices. Rolling out.
  • Room optimization mode in Teams desktop. Replaces shared display mode for focus and huddle rooms without a Teams Rooms system. It auto-selects connected room audio and video devices, turns on speaker recognition and shared display, and turns off voice isolation. Rolling out. (ID 564912, MC1400830)
  • Meeting room join time comparison analytics. Compare join times in Teams Rooms with BYOD rooms in the Pro Management portal, with proactive recommendations. Requires Teams Rooms Pro and Teams Shared Space licenses. Rolling out.
  • Bookable desks with Teams panel desk hubs. Panel-based desk hubs show desk availability and let people book the desk on the device. Each device needs a Teams Shared Space license. Rolling out. (ID 561031, MC1330887)
  • Modernized Gallery view in Teams Rooms on Android. Video participants are prioritized on stage, aspect ratios stay consistent and tiles move less. Admin defaults via local device settings and the Pro Management portal. Rolling out. (ID 567468, MC1446797)

Zero-touch provisioning is the one I’m most happy about. Rolling out a batch of Android room systems still means a lot of manual work per device, and an Autopilot-like model is long overdue.

Teams device software updates

  • Teams Rooms on Windows, 5.7.112.0 (September 28, 2026): Teams Rooms app updates are now delivered exclusively through the Teams Rooms Pro Management Portal and no longer through the Microsoft Store. Also adds local PTZ camera controls from the in-room console, with enablement planned for October 2026.
  • Teams Rooms on Windows, 5.6.210.0 (August 3, 2026): adds support for Windows 11 25H2. Once installed, devices running Windows 11 update to 25H2 automatically within about a week.
  • Teams Rooms on Android, 1449/1.0.96.2026261804 (September 2026): Google Meet Direct Guest Join, two-way interop with one-touch join from the calendar or by meeting ID. The earlier September build (1449/1.0.96.2026249711) brought the Interpreter agent (Pro), the modernized Gallery view, Town hall chat (Pro) and SIP/H.323 dialing through a supported partner (Pro).
  • Teams Rooms on Android, 1449/1.0.96.2026144512 (August 2026): fixes only, including calendaring for devices still on Exchange Web Services, HDMI sharing failures and freezes, blank secondary displays on dual-screen setups, and devices going to sleep during a town hall.
  • Teams panels, 1449/1.0.97.2026286706 (August 2026): digital signage on idle panels (with partners like Appspace and XOGO, included with Teams Rooms Pro or Teams Shared Space), local settings on AudioCodes, Cisco, Jabra, Logitech, Neat and Poly panels syncing back to the Pro Management portal, and support for panel-based desk hubs such as Logi Dock Flex.
  • Teams phones, 1449/1.0.94.2026226711 (September 30, 2026): monitoring and reliability fixes for Poly, Yealink and AudioCodes. The August and September builds before it brought faster navigation on touch and non-touch phones, and fixed common area phone advanced calling configuration not applying after an update, crashes on incoming calls, and failing calls to call queue and auto attendant resource accounts from line keys and sidecars.

Two action items here. First, if your Teams Rooms on Windows estate relied on Microsoft Store updates, that path is gone with 5.7.112.0, so make sure your rooms are in the Pro Management Portal. Second, if you still have Android rooms using EWS for calendaring, Microsoft advises updating to the August build or newer before you disable EWS in the tenant.

Why this matters

This quarter is really about the Queues app growing up. Shared call history, resolution status, recaps, Copilot and automatic recording together turn call queues from a routing mechanism into something teams can actually work in, and Teams Phone Agent plus Copilot Studio voice agents add an AI front door on top of it. For organizations that looked at a separate contact center platform just to get shared history and recordings, it is worth taking another look at what Teams Phone with Teams Premium now covers.

On the device side, the shift of Teams Rooms updates to the Pro Management Portal and zero-touch provisioning for Android both point the same way: Pro Management is becoming the place where you run your room estate. If you’re not using it yet, now is a good time to start.
